Career Matters - An Introduction

Welcome to my website, and welcome to the section dedicated to my thoughts on the intersection of psychology, career counseling, and mental health therapy! So why write about work, jobs, and careers? And why should I be the one to do it? Professionally, I’m a therapist first and foremost, but I’m also trained as a vocational psychologist. What exactly does that mean? To put it plainly, it means that I have spent a lot of time reading, researching, and writing about a variety of career-related topics, such as:

  • career choice,

  • career development,

  • career transitions,

  • career self-management,

  • work-life balance,

  • meaning in work,

  • and coping with unemployment.

That’s a long list of career-related topics, but here’s what it all boils down to: most of us work, most of us have had (or will have) more than one job, and the trajectory of our work is important to us - in other words, career matters.

Given the significance of work in our lives, it's unsurprising that our mental health can be both profoundly influenced by and have a significant impact on our jobs. Career-related issues are important topics for therapy, and in my opinion, not enough people think about seeking out a therapist when they’re struggling with their careers. As I mentioned earlier, I’m a mental health therapist who works with a variety of concerns (click on the “Services” tab on my website to see a brief list of common presenting problems I work with), but I do have a particular passion for career-related topics in therapy and how to help people with these issues. Just as importantly, as a therapist, I think about career-related issues not in isolation, but in terms of how they fit (or don’t fit) into our overall lives.

As someone uniquely positioned at the intersection of psychology, career counseling, and mental health therapy, I'm eager to share my reflections, musings, and valuable resources with those intrigued by the intersection of career matters and psychology / therapy. I hope I’ve piqued your curiosity, and I hope that you’ll find something I’ve written about useful - click around, and feel free to offer a comment or a suggestion!

Some topics that you’ll see me tackle include:

  • What are the ways in which we psychologically benefit from work?

  • How unemployment is linked to worsening mental health, and what to do about it.

  • What’s the difference between a career counselor and a therapist?

  • What to do when you’re running out of steam and see burnout coming around the corner.

  • What’s the best way to explore career issues in therapy?

Stay tuned for more!
